    Wireless

I’ve worked with The Wireless Dealer Magazine for over 7 years. I’ve been the Art Director for the magazine since 2004. The WDM is a trade magazine that caters to the wireless dealer, retailer and wholesaler industry. We publish 4-6 magazines a year. Each magazine is designed, edited, proofed and sent to print by DesignByOne.com.

I usually design anywhere from 3-18 of the magazine client ads as well as design the layout for all the editorials. We have a wonderful staff of creative role players. It takes the combined efforts of everyone on the WDM team to publish one of the industries top magazines.

FMC Technologies Global R&D Capabilities Brochure

I’ve worked with FMC Technologies for over five years. Together we have designed multiple sales brochures, technical documents, posters, sales books, product announcements, trade show graphics and the list goes on. This month, DesignByOne.com designed a brochure that highlights FMC Technologies R&D Capabilities and Network.

The project required the design of a graphic that could represent the data path FMC Technologies uses to share company information on a global level.

The brochure went through several phases of redesign. I have included a few of the different versions at the bottom of this post.

The final version has been printed and will be used as collateral at various FMC Technologies functions.

Kingwood High School Homecoming Party Flyer

The Kingwood Asylum is a haunted house staged and produced by immersive Media. This is the first of several posters that I will design this year. We have been building our new sets this month and will continue to build the rest of the asylum through October 20th. Every year is a different design and this will probably be our last year to build out in suburbia.

Next year I expect that we will need to purchase property and design the official Kingwood Asylum. Last year we had 1200 visitors go through our “suburbia” haunted house. We are expecting double that number this year.

Kingwood High School Homecoming Party Flyer

A good friend asked if I would help design a flyer to promote her beauty/fashion high school homecoming party. I needed to include information on what the party would be about and how to contact her or her daughter. She left the entire design up to me.

I decided to design a “club style” flyer that incorporated strong colors and large blocks of action graphics. My friend was happy with the outcome and now time will tell if the flyer was a success.

    Output: Print
    Color: RGB
    Time to develop: 1.5 hr.

    eMail Marketing Tip

eMail marketing is an effective customer building tool for any company that has a product or service to advertise. The investment is small. The time commitment is minimal. The return on the investment can be great.

Creating an effective eMail marketing campaign requires smart, goal-oriented thinking. Before you begin an eMail marketing campaign you need to answer a few smart questions regarding your targeted audience. Here are the questions I ask myself before I design an eMail Marketing Campaign:

    Target Audience Questions

You need to research your target audience. Find out what the purchasing habits are for each company. Find out if they use social media. ie: Flickr, Twitter, FaceBook, Digg. Find out if the businesses in your target audience know one another.

The more you know about your target audience the more effective you can be with your eMail marketing campaign.

Split your large email contact list up. It doesn’t take a lot of energy to split your email list up into smaller, similar groups. Groups that have a lot more in common with each other are easier to market.

    Vincall Agent eMail Advertisement

For example – You have an inventory of mobile device chargers and protective cases. You have designed an eMail advertisement that promotes both of these products. You want to send this new advertisement out to your list of 1500 wireless retailers, dealers and wholesalers. Unfortunately, you only know 2% of the companies in your email contact list.

By sending your eMail advertisement out to the list of 1500 email contacts you stand to lose potential customers. Not everyone in the wireless industry wants to purchase chargers and/or protective cases. Lets say for example that 25% of your list is interested in chargers and 45% is interested in protective cases. This still leaves 30% unaccounted for. By sending out a blanket eMail advertisement to your entire wireless email list you have completely missed 30% of potential customers and also ended up in the trash/spam boxes of those not interested in your product.

Know your customers and take the time to turn one large eMail advertisement into two or three more effective advertisements. Send the targeted advertisement to the smaller group for a greater return on your investment.

    Kirk Fuson

Article by: Kathy Katcher, CEO and Publisher of The Wireless Dealer Magazine

Kirk Fuson, Wireless Dealer Magazine’s in-house art-director started working for the Wireless Dealer Magazine ten years ago, back then it was called the Wireless Dealer Network. As CEO and Publisher, I posted an ad on the back page of one of our issues for an art designer. Kirk Fuson responded to the ad within one hour of the post. He has been our in-house art designer since.

I selected Kirk as our first featured employee of the year because he has not only been the man-behind- the-brand for Wireless Dealer Magazine, he is also a brand advocate for many of our advertisers representing hundreds wireless products.

Several funny stories and one absolutely dreadful story come to mind when thinking about Kirk and his value to the entire team at Wireless Dealer Magazine.

The first story is a funny one! Kirk started with us when we were printing our first edition of Wireless Dealer Magazine. To our surprise, 75% of our customers had not placed any print ads in any publication and it was our first time printing a magazine. Many of our advertisers were just learning how to clip pictures online and add them to a document adding a bit of product information for text.

Many of advertisers submit artwork on deadline day or even later. Deadline day to get our magazine files to the printer is always a nail biter. The first edition of Wireless Dealer Magazine was no exception. Our printer kicked back 90% of our ads submitted and said all the colors are going to print gray or faded due to all the ads being designed in RBG vs. CMYK. There was absolutely no time to go back to that many advertisers and request new files. The magazine had 12 days to print and mail to be in stores by Dec 1st.

Kirk and I cleared a huge amount of floor space in the printing building which was under renovation to be remodeled as loft business space. We laid out each ad on the floor covering 2,000 square feet and circled every single color in all the ads that did not print to it’s true color. Kirk went back to his office and began re-coloring every single color in all the ads with its CMYK color needed to print the color seen in each ad.

Haunted By My RoommatesWhen did you start painting? I started way back when I was a little baby. Well not really a baby.. but little.. my mom and dad were always buying me sketch books and crayons and even sent me to Honduras one year to learn how to paint..

Leo Sapien – Art Show Video

So did you learn anything worth mentioning in Honduras? Actually no..unless you mean painting in the traditional central American arts market sort of way…. everything I have been doing I’ve pretty much learned on my own.. with the exception of a few things I might have picked up from some one else..

What do you call yourself in the area of art? I’m not one for titles.. you can call me what you like.. I think I would like to be called a professional..

Bag LadyWhat do you call your style of painting? (laughs) well it varies from show to show and from piece to piece.. if we wanted to get all art snob about it…in a snooty voice “post modern, urbanism with a nostalgic twist”… yeah I think that’s what it should be called.. but I’ll leave that to the collectors…

What color can you not live without in a painting? black mostly black…

What painting tool is indispensable to you? My mind…

What is your favorite painting medium? Mostly acrylics.. I really don’t have the time nor patience to get involved with oils and encaustics… and I really don’t have enough room to work on sculptures and installations.. so yeah acrylics are my best bet..

What subject if any have you not painted that you would like to? Live models.. tired of spending countless hours looking for some decent stock photos with models that really know what they are doing.. its mostly just ugly people with cameras that give away the free stuff…

What other medium if any would you like to try? Maybe one day move into giant scaled sculptures and art installations.

Are you self-taught or formally educated/tutored in painting?Skeletor a little bit of both really.. not sure how I actually learned what it is that I actually do.

What is your primary art inspiration? It varies, from my mood, to what I just saw on tv. to even classic and modern architecture.. I guess anything and everything..

What is your dream/ goal for painting?Zombie Drop Money!! (laughs) no actually I sell my work for very cheap.. I want even the less fortunate to be able to have actual works of art that they didn’t buy at the thrift store.

I love photography! With 47,600,000 results popping up in google for “photographers”, it’s a great time to discover today’s talent. That is exactly what I like to do during my design downtime. For this listing, I want to bring attention to 23 of my favorite advertising photographers.

Now I know that I titled this post “23 Great Advertising Photographers You Should Know” but really I’ve included advertising and editorial pictures. Sometimes the line between advertising and editorial shots can be blurry. Melissa Rodwell, a Los Angeles fashion photographer has written an excellent post about the difference on her blog: Fashion Photography Blog. It’s a great read with inspiring examples of both advertising and editorial photography. If you get the chance, please check out her excellent blog.

I’m certain that you could add another 23 photographers to my list. Post a few comments with your favorite advertising, fashion, editorial photographers and I’ll add them to the list.

    • What criteria do you use to determine who is better than the next?
    • What photographers float your boat and why?

So without further ado, here is my list.

    1. Marcel Pabst

    2. Andrea Klarin

    3. Arthur Elgort

    4. Caleb Kuhl

    5. David Mandelberg
